I'm a huge fan of Midnight Chicken!! What beautiful writing and easy yet delicious recipes. Have you read Ella's second book? I borrowed it from a friend recently but haven't gotten round to reading it yet
Yes yes yes, the writing is sooooo good AND the recipes are accessible!! I haven't picked up her second one; I'm afraid I will want to immediately cook everything from it. Let me know what you think if you read it!
Haha, a good recipe book is such a double edged sword isn't it! Makes you fall in love with it but there's only so many meals in a day and I want them all NOW
I checked Midnight Chicken out of the library after reading your review of it and I’m OBSESSED. The writing is beautiful. Can’t wait to cook out of it. Thank you for the inspo!!
Ahhhh nothing makes me happier than this!!! I’m so glad you checked it out and I would LOVE to hear if you have any favorite recipes you end up making. 😘🤩
Wow! I’m so glad I found you ! I’m subscribing! Have you taken any courses at King Arthur? I have taken two in Vermont and LOVED it . if you haven’t, it’s a bucket list experience. It’s near Dartmouth, what’s not to love? They have a very long … a few days… bread making school . I did French tarts and Middle eastern breads in two afternoons. They also teach on line and it is FANTASTIC. Just so great to be in your own kitchen and have someone at that level teach you how to bake. I also wanted to mention their new revised Cookie Book is fabulous. My cookies don’t normally come out great . We made seven recipes over the Christmas holiday . All seven were great !
Hi Chrissy!! So glad you found your way here! I'm now SUPER intrigued by these courses at King Arthur. They sound incredible. I'll have to check that out...along with the new Cookie Book! 😍
Midnight Chicken is definitely one of my all time favorite cookbooks . I have lots and lots of cookbooks .It is right up there in my top 5. I love the writing , her story , and the recipes. I became a big fan of hers. ❤️
I just wrote a similar review about Lifeform. Loved some of it, struggled with some. I found I had the same issues with Slate’s other memoir, Little Weirds. I read her for the essay gems and because I appreciate anyone who pushes against the edges of their chosen art form.
Kathleen! I'm so so happy to hear this, and so glad you are here reading along! Let me know if you have any other watercolor things you love, as I'm just diving in.
Thank you for inspiring me to revisit the Midnight Chicken cookbook. I haven't opened it in a while and am excited to try the challah. Also, I will definitely be making Dan Pelosi's chocolate chip cookies. One of my (crazier) goals this year is to do a chocolate chip cookie bake-off & review to see how my favorite recipes stack up against one another. I've never tried this one, and it sounds wonderful!
Oh, you're so kind! I will absolutely share my first painting with you. Thanks for writing such a beautiful and engaging book! I'm seriously so excited to dive in. 🤩

Ahhh yes! Exactly!!! The gems almost make it worth it...it's just a weird one to recommend because it's so unhinged haha
I am going to make that bolognese tonight!!!
Ooooo I’m inviting myself over, then. 😘 it’s gonna be so good!!
I love reading your substack!!! Cooking, reading, watercolor- my 3 fav hobbies!!!

I love Midnight Chicken. Such a beautifully written cookbook!
Isn't it lovely?!
Such a joy to read! Those recipes sound amazing. Hopefully, I'll be able to find that cookbook here somewhere!
I hope you are able to snag a copy somewhere!! She also has another one out, "The Year of Miracles," that I'm excited to check out hopefully soon.
